Men’s Tennis: Cajuns Win Fourth Straight Match At Rice

HOUSTON, Texas – The Louisiana men’s tennis team won its fourth straight match on Sunday defeating Rice in a non-conference dual match 5-2 at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.

"This is a good win for the program,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Rice has always been one of the teams regionally that our school has had some real battles with, and it is nice to be able to pick up the win."

In doubles, the Cajuns (8-2) fell behind early losing the decision on court three. After a win on court two by Jake Wynan and Rick de Groot, twins Hunter and Yates Johnson defeated the duo of Tommy Bennett and David Warren, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point.

"Our doubles wasn’t the best today, but again the guys found a way to win," Jeffrey added.

Hunter Johnson was the first to finish in singles winning 6-2, 6-2 against Henrik Munch to give Louisiana a 2-0 advantage. Jake Wynan extended the lead to 3-0 defeating Max Andrews at the No.4 position, 6-4, 6-1.

"The guys really came out well in singles,” Jeffrey said. “Hunter Johnson was big again getting off court quickly. Jake also played very well, and the efforts of both Jake and Hunter helped us stay on top after the doubles point.”

The Owls (2-7) cut in the lead to 3-1 with a win on court one by Tommy Bennett versus de Groot, 6-4, 6-4, but Edgar Lopez clinched the match at the No.2 position besting Adam Gustafsson, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

"Edgar did a great job to clinch,” Jeffrey noted. "I thought Damian helped impact the match being loud. He gives up everything for the team. Overall it was a good win for the guys."

Jarred Wynan also notched a victory defeating David Warren on court five, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.

The Cajuns are set to head to Corpus Christi, Texas for the HEB Tournament of Champions from Feb. 28-March 1. For more info on men’s tennis follow the team on twitter @CajunMensTennis.
