Men’s Tennis: Cajuns Sweep Way Into SBC Tournament Semifinals

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns swept their way into the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday with an opening-round 4-0 win over Georgia Southern at the UNO Tennis Courts.
 
The Cajuns (14-12), who entered the event as the No. 5 seed, needed just four singles matches to dispose of the fourth-seeded Eagles (8-13) who had pulled a 4-3 upset over the Cajuns just two weeks ago in Lafayette.
 
The win moves Louisiana into the tournament semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Troy at 3:00 p.m.  The Cajuns did not face the Trojans in regular-season play.
 
Louisiana worked around weather issues throughout the morning with inclement weather altering the start of the match multiple times and forcing the teams to move locations from City Park to the UNO courts on the campus of the University of New Orleans.
 
But the defending tournament champion Cajuns flexed their strength early on, finishing the match with straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 singles.
 
Will Huyton got it started with a (6-1, 6-4) win over Nico de Groof at No. 4just before Jarred Wynan upped the score to 2-0 with a (6-4, 6-4) victory over Christian Kerrigan at No. 5 play.
 
Jake Wynan swept by Albert Codina Sala (6-4, 6-2) on the No. 2 court before Damian Farinola closed it out in a second set tiebreaker with a (6-4, 7-6) win over Kyle Hoffman at No. 3 singles play.
 
The Cajuns also held leads in each of the two other singles matches from Edgar Lopez and Vlad Kramarov before play was halted following the clinching point.
