HOUSTON, Texas –
The Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team picked up three wins in three tries in the first round of the USTA Futures Event on Saturday, with all three advancing to the semifinals of the qualifying draw for the main event of the Texas Tamale Company Houston Cup.

"The guys came out with a good attitude and it was even a little windy today too, so conditions were difficult," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "I was glad that Vlad (Kramarov) got off to a good start in his match, which set the tone for the rest of the way. Damian (Farinola) came out strong as well defeating his Russian opponent pretty convincingly in the second set"

Kramarov, a freshman from Ukraine, advanced with a (6-1, 6-2) win over Sergio Avella. He will next square off against Germany’s Michael Feucht for a berth in the qualifying finals.

Meanwhile, Farinola moved past Russia’s Iznaur Akhmaev (6-0, 6-2) to advance to face Germany’s Lukas Finzelberg in the next round.

Jake Wynan was the third Cajun to advance, doing so in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) over Nipun Kakkar of India. He will next take on Great Britain’s Daniel Manilow on Sunday.

"The competition is going to be a lot tougher tomorrow, so we need to be ready," Jeffrey said. "We play two guys with ATP rankings so we really look forward to those matches and seeing where the guys are at this stage of the year."
