Men’s Tennis: Cajuns Finish 3rd at HEB Tournament of Champions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team finished the HEB Tournament of Champions in third place this weekend, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-2 on Saturday.
 
The win improved the Cajuns’ record to 9-7 this spring.
 
"We were down 4-1 on Number two doubles," Ragin’ Cajuns head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "They came back and won with five straight games. That gave us good momentum to gain the doubles point at 3. We lost four first sets in singles but clawed our way back. Jake Wynan helped us get to 2-1 and then Eric Perez gave us a ton of momentum with his win. Wahlborg dealed with a lot of adversity in the first set, but stayed on track throughout the whole match and broke his guy down to seal the victory, 4-2."
 
In doubles, junior Coleman Wahlborg and senior Jake Wynan defeated Guillaume Rauseo and Ricard Mayagoitia, 6-4 at No. 2. Junior Will Huyton and freshman Arthur Libaud closed out doubles with a 6-2 win over Mitchell Cook and Carlos Pedrosa at No. 3.
 
In singles, Rauseo defeated Huyton, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. The Cajuns took the next two matches, as Wynan won No. 3 over Javier Pujol, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 and junior Eric Perez came back to eliminate Arthur Bedel, 6-7 (6-7), 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
 
The Islanders’ Kevin Bettendroffer topped senior Edgar Lopez at No. 1, 6-7 (6-7) 6-3, 6-3. Wahlborg clinched the victory for UL at No. 5 with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Pedrosa at No. 5 singles.
 
The Cajuns return to the court next Saturday, March 12 at No. 67 Georgia State. First serve is set for noon.
