Men’s Tennis: Cajuns Claim 5-2 Win Over Privateers In Regular-Season Finale

NEW ORLEANS – Edgar Lopez posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles over New Orleans’ Jeffrey Hsu to help lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s tennis team to a 5-2 win over the Privateers in the regular-season finale on Sunday at the University Tennis Complex.

Arthur Libaud and Coleman Wahlborg each posted straight-set victories in singles play for Louisiana (17-10) with Vlad Kramarov claiming a 6-2, 6-7, 14-12 victory over Luis Albuquerque at No. 4 singles.

"It was good for the guys to get some extra match play in with the windy conditions down here in New Orleans," head coach Mark Jeffrey said.

Lopez, who won for the eighth time in his last nine decisions, improved to 14-4 in singles play while combining with Eric Perez in improving to 17-6 overall in doubles play.

"Today was key to keep the footwork going because it was pretty windy," Lopez said. "It was a great opportunity to gain confidence for (the Sun Belt) conference (tournament). I feel really good with my shots right now and need to keep it going next week."

Lopez and Perez helped clinch the doubles point for Louisiana as they posted a 6-2 win over Hsu and Luis Albuquerque at No. 1. The Ragin’ Cajuns opened doubles play with a win at No. 2 as Kramarov and Wahlborg posted a 6-0 win over UNO’s Giacomo Adoncecchi and Karim Shokeir.

Wahlborg gave Louisiana a 2-0 lead after he posted a 6-0, 6-3 over Shokeir at No. 6 singles before Libaud earned his third straight win and improved to 12-5 on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gonzalo Garcia at No. 3.

"I am feeling better and better each match and the hard work is paying off, so it is very satisfying," Libaud said. "I am really looking forward to (SBC) conference to confirm the level of tennis that our team has reached this season."

Kramarov, who improved to 11-10 on the season, added to Louisiana’s win total after he posted a 6-2, 6-7, 14-12 win over Albuquerque at No. 4 singles.

New Orleans (7-7) picked up wins in singles play as Nicolas Kramer defeated Perez at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8, while Adoncecchi claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 over Will Huyton at No. 2.

Louisiana will return to action when it competes in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, scheduled for April 22-24 at New Orleans’ City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center.
