LONG EARNS SUN BELT HONORS FOR SECOND TIME IN 2013-14

 

 

NEW ORLEANS:  After earning MVP honors and helping the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball team to the team title at the EA Sports Maui on the Mainland Invitational last weekend, sophomore Shawn Long was selected on Tuesday as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week in a release by the league office.

 

 

The selection of Long, a Preseason first-team All-Sun Belt pick, marked the second time this season the Morgan City native was tabbed as the league’s Player-of-the-Week after he claimed the initial award on Nov. 12.

 

 

In two games last week for the Ragin’ Cajuns, Long averaged 21.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in helping Louisiana (4-2) to the team championship and being named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

 

 

In the Cajuns’ 84-75 victory over Oakland last Saturday, Long scored 24 points and matched his career high with 17 rebounds and five blocks to post his third double-double of the season.

 

 

Long came back in the championship game on Sunday against host Coastal Carolina to score 18 points with seven rebounds and three blocks in a 73-69 victory. Long was limited to 20 minutes of action in the contest after picking up two fouls and sitting the final 18:28 of the first half.

 

 

The 6-foot-9 product, who finished 6-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line, scored the first 11 points of the second half for Louisiana which helped push a seven-point lead into a 42-30 cushion.

 

 

On the season for the Ragin’ Cajuns, Long is averaging 20.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game while shooting 58 percent (47-for-81) from the floor.

 

 

Louisiana will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to defending Southland Conference Tournament champion Northwestern State (2-2) in a 7:05 p.m. contest at the Cajundome.
