Men’s Basketball: Long Named SBC Player Of The Week For Second Time

Shawn Long 2014

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Ragin’ Cajuns junior Shawn Long was named the Sun Belt Conference player of the week for the second time this season, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Long led the Cajuns to a pair of SBC-opening wins in the last week, averaging 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks in two games. For the week the junior hit .586 from the floor and also hit three of eight shots from beyond the three-point arc.

An all-conference selection a year ago, Long picked up his 40th career double-double in a league-opening win at UALR, hitting 10 of 18 shots from the floor for 23 points to go with 12 rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks against the Trojans.

Five nights later he pumped in 18 points, pulled in nine rebounds and blocked a pair of shots in a 27-point win over Troy.

This is the fifth time in Long’s career he has earned the weekly honor from the league. He currently ranks sixth in the SBC with 15.8 points, second with 8.6 rebounds and is tied for the league lead with 1.9 blocks per game.

Long and the Ragin’ Cajuns go for their first 3-0 start in Sun Belt Conference play on Monday night at Appalachian State before returning home for a Thursday meeting against Georgia State.
