Men’s Basketball: Long Named SBC, LSWA Player of the Week
Senior sweeps awards for second time in last three weeks
NEW ORLEANS – After averaging a double-double and helping the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns to a pair of Sun Belt Conference victories, Shawn Long earned a pair of awards on Monday as he was named the Sun Belt Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week in a release by both organizations.
Long, a senior from Morgan City, helped the Ragin’ Cajuns extend their win streak to six games after averaging 20.5 points, 14.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in SBC contests against Texas State and UT Arlington. He finished the week 13-for-21 (.619) from the floor and was 15-for-17 (.882) from the free throw line. The No. 3 rebounder among Division I players this season (12.8 rpg.) and the active NCAA leader in career double-doubles (66) and rebounds (1,279), Long opened the week scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in an 80-54 win over Texas State on Thursday. Long came back on Saturday with a 22-point, 15-rebound performance in the Cajuns’ 90-75 win over UTA for his 14th double-double of the season. Long, who blocked a season-high six shots against the Mavs, finished 6-for-10 from the floor and was perfect from the free throw line going 10-for-10. His final bucket scored against UTA moved him past former Ragin’ Cajuns standout Jerry Flake for fifth-place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 2,059 points. Louisiana (11-8, 7-3 SBC) will return to action on Tuesday when it faces ULM (10-11, 6-4 SBC) to close out a season-long five-game homestand at the Cajundome. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
