Shawn Long

MONROE, La. – After netting a double-double for the week, Louisiana junior forward Shawn Long has been named the Co-Louisiana Sports Writers Association men’s basketball player of the week along with Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth ‘Speedy’ Smith after voting by an LSWA panel on Monday.

Long, who earned his second LSWA weekly honor of the season on Monday, continued his stellar junior season with a pair of double-doubles to up his career total to 45, a mark that is the highest among active players in the NCAA.

The Morgan City, La., native averaged 21.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in a split of road games at South Alabama and Texas State. He also hit .583 from the field and .923 from the foul line, in addition to hitting half of his six tries from three-point range.

Long hit 10 of his 16 tries from the field for 26 points at South Alabama on Thursday, adding 12 rebounds and three blocks. Two days later he pulled in 13 more rebounds and added 17 points in a win at Texas State. He now needs just eight more points to become the 13th player in Ragin’ Cajuns basketball history to reach 1,500 points for his career.

He and the rest of the Ragin’ Cajuns are back at home this week for a pair of games, beginning Thursday against Appalachian State. The Cajuns will then host UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in a game to be aired nationally on ESPN2.
