Men’s Basketball: Back-to-Back Double-Doubles Lands Josh Brown LSWA Honors

Coming off a week in which he posted a double-double in consecutive contests, Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball senior guard Josh Brown was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Brown was one of two players awarded LSWA Player of the Week honors. He shared honors with Raheem Appleby of Louisiana Tech.

The Ruston native picked up his second LSWA Player of the Week accolade of the season. He received the honor on Jan. 16 following the South Alabama-FIU homestand (averaged 18 points and 8.5 rebounds for the Cajuns that week).

Brown averaged a double-double for the week in helping lead Louisiana to its second consecutive 2-0 week in Sun Belt action. He averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in the Cajuns wins over Denver (72-71 OT) and Troy (83-78).

Brown posted a double-double in both games finishing with 21 points and 10 boards vs. Denver on Thursday and following up with 12 points and 11 boards at Troy on Saturday.

He averaged 37 minutes of action per game and shot 14-of-31 (45.2 percent). His nine field goals made vs. Denver were his season-and career-best. He became the first Cajun this season to notch back-to-back games with a double-double.

In Thursday’s overtime win over Denver he scored a team-best 11 points in the second half as the Cajuns rallied from a halftime deficit to force the extra frame. In the waning seconds of overtime, Brown picked up a loose ball off a Raymone Andrews steal and dished the ball to Elfrid Payton who drew a foul with 0.4 seconds on a layup attempt that led to the game-winning free throw.

On Saturday at Troy, Brown registered nine points and seven rebounds in the first half pacing the Cajuns to a 30-28 halftime lead. He picked up four of his game-high five assists in the second stanza.

In Sun Belt play, Brown is averaging a team-best 12.9 points and team-best 8.0 rebounds per game.

His strong rebounding effort in league games has vaulted him into the Top 5 in the Sun Belt in rebounds per game. Averaging 6.7 rebounds per game for the season, Brown is currently fifth in the league.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are home at the Cajundome this week for two key contests against the Arkansas schools. Louisiana meets UALR on Thursday at 7:05 p.m., with first place in the Sun Belt West division on the line. UL trails UALR by a half game in the standings. Then on Saturday, the Cajuns seek to avenge a 79-74 loss to Arkansas State back on Jan. 21 in Jonesboro when they meet the Red Wolves in a 7:15 p.m., contest.
