The Daily Advertiser sports department won first place for ‘Best Section’ in Class II in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s annual writing contest for 2015.

Individually, UL Ragin’ Cajun beat writer Tim Buckley and Advertiser sports engagement editor Kevin Foote won awards as well.

Buckley won first place in the Class II ‘College Event’ category for his game story of UL’s home football loss to Akron. Buckley also won a third place for an Outdoors feature on UL baseball player Dylan Butler’s love of hunting and fishing.

Buckley’s final award was a third place in the ‘Spot News’ category for his coverage of UL’s football program being investigated by the NCAA.

Foote won first place in the category of ‘Pro Feature’ in Class II for a story on local women’s professional boxing champion Deirdre Gogarty. He was also second in the Columnist of the Year honors and won a third place in ‘College Feature’ category for a story on UL retiring the jersey of Kim Perrot.

Lafayette’s Dan McDonald also won three awards — second place in Class II ‘College Feature’ for a story on Yvette Girouard, a first place in ‘Web Feature’ for a story on the history of the Sun Belt Basketball Tournament and second in ‘Web Column’ for a story on struggles in the UL football program.
