Making the Turn: UL golf spring slateMaking the Turn: UL golf spring slate
Dan McDonald, The Advertiser, Feb. 15, 2017 UL’s golf team begins its spring season this weekend, when the Ragin’ Cajuns head to Mobile, Alabama, on Sunday to take part in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate Tournament at the acclaimed Magnolia Grove course.
That also means it’s only one week before the Cajuns stage their only home event of the year as the second tournament of the spring season. For the 32nd straight year, Oakbourne will be the site of the Louisiana Classics Tournament on Feb. 27-28.
A 12-team field is scheduled to compete in the Classics, which also includes a college-am tournament, where local players are paired up with the collegians in the Feb. 26 practice round. That tournament has some openings for players and for individuals who wish to serve as hosts for the teams, and information on playing in the college-am and on the Classics tournament is available from UL coach Theo Sliman at tsliman@louisiana.edu.
Practice round for the Mobile event is Sunday, with 36 holes scheduled for Monday and a final 18 on Tuesday. The Cajuns finished 12th of 15 teams in last year’s Mobile event but had two players finish in the top 20, including returnee Fernando Cruz Valle, while Ryan Desormeaux finished in the top 15 in the accompanying individual tournament.
“Making the Turn” appears each Wednesday from February-November in the Daily Advertiser. Clubs, courses and individuals with information about local golf events may email Dan McDonald, editorial director at Golfballs.com, at danmcdonald@cox.net, FAX to (337) 857-8763 or call (337) 857-8754 and leave a message with phone number.
