HOMECOMING TONIGHT AT USL

Homecoming is always a time of many activities.

The USL-UT/Arlington football game will be no different.

A busy schedule for both the pre-game and halftime of Saturday night’s crucial Southland Conference meeting between USL’s Ragin’ Cajuns and the Movin’ Mavs of UTA.

In the pre-game, the USL Homecoming Court will be introduced to the crowd as well as the spirit and float winners.

Then there will be the annual appearance of the USL Alumni Band.

More than 60 former USL band members will perform in the pre-game, including such notables as Lafayette Mayor Kenny Bowen, newsman Graham Smith from Channel 3, local restauranteur Ed LeBlanc and retailer Charlie Aillet, the band’s drum major.

"This year’s show is dedicated to Robert Gilmore, who was band director in the late 1940’s and 1950’s," says Jack Arceneaux, who is current president of the Alumni Band. "Mr. Gilmore will be celebrating his 70th birthday. He is known to South Louisiana for his promotion of French ballads and folk songs."

Earl Parquette, former band director at Acadiana High School and McNeese State, will be the guest director.

The Alumni Band will perform some pop songs to the student side and some jazzy numbers of the Press Box side stands. Also, the USL Sweethearts will perform in the pre-game with Alumni Band accompaniment.

The Rev. Don Ross of the Wesley Student Center will give the invocation and the National Anthem will be sung by Dean Scott, who will entertain at the Alumni Dance after the game at Blackham Coliseum.

A busy halftime will include the crowning of the USL Homecoming Queen, a performance by USL’s "Pride of Acadiana Marching Band" and the induction of three former USL athletic greats into the USL Hall of Fame.

Belinda Baine, a senior Agriculture major from Metairie, will be crowned USL’s 1979 Homecoming Queen following a performance by the USL Band. She is also a USL cheerleader.

The "Pride of Acadiana Marching Band" will perform five numbers.

To start the show, the Band, under the direction of Jim Goodman, will play "Georgia" with a beautiful display of streamers and scarves. Then will follow the "Sabre Dance", a drum section sold called "Rootbeer Rag", featuring David Segura from Lafayette in a piano solo, and "Rock Around the Clock" which will feature the USL color guard. The finale will be a fanfare honoring the Homecoming Court.

Following the presentation of the Homecoming Queen, former USL athletic greats Bill McHorris, Ray Boudreaux and Walter Imahara will be inducted into the USL Hall of Fame.

McHorris was a former basketball player at USL in the late 1950’s, while Boudreaux was a football star in the early 1950’s. Imahara was one of the persons responsible for starting the USL weightlifting program and is a former national champion in the featherweight class.

All-in-all the pre-game and halftime will have as much action as the Cajun’s football game itself. – Lafayette Daily Advertiser 11/10/1979.
