Here’s how much Louisiana colleges are paying their coaches
Here’s a look at what coaches at Louisiana public universities get paid. The breakdown is based on reviews of their contracts as well as data provided by system officials. The heavy-hitters, not surprisingly, tend to be at athletic directors and/or football coaches at larger schools. Who makes the most?LSU’s Athletic Director Joe Alleva has the highest base salary at $525,000. He also is a vice president at the state flagship university and receives $725,000 a year in total pay. Football Coach Ed Orgeron’s base salary is just a bit lower at $500,000, but his total pay comes to $3.5 million. The median coach salary in the Southeastern Conference was $4,172,500 in 2016 when Orgeron was hired as head coach, according to USA Today. Of his supplemental pay, $2.5 million is for services of promoting, appearing on or participating in LSU-sanctioned programs on television, radio, internet and social media. He is not to appear on anything without prior approval of the school president and athletic director, according to his contract. Another $500,000 in supplemental pay is for services rendered to the Tiger Athletic Foundation and earned through the team’s shoe and equipment contracts. Men’s basketball Coach Will Wade’s base pay is $400,000 a year, but total pay is $2.5 million. Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri’s base pay is $350,000 and total pay is $1,125,000. Women’s basketball Coach Nikki Fargas has the same base salary as Mainieri, but her total pay is $700,000 a year. In the University of Louisiana System, the highest-paid coach was UL Lafayette’s former football Coach Mark Hudspeth, who made more than $1 million a year. Hudspeth was fired Sunday after seven seasons with the school, which plays in the SunBelt Conference. The second-highest paid in the system comes from the same school. UL Lafayette’s men’s basketball Coach Robert Marlin’s salary is $519,684, according to data from the UL System. That is higher than several football coaches, usually the highest-paid sport in Louisiana, at smaller schools in the system. Matt Viator, University of Louisiana at Monroe’s football coach, makes $350,000 a year. The next closest to that figure are from Louisiana Tech ($200,000) and Grambling State ($195,000). The three football teams each play in a different conference. Who makes the least?Sports that attract the lowest salaries for Louisiana coaches are tennis, bowling and golf, which range from the high $30,000s to high $40,000s. UL Lafayette’s men’s tennis coach is on the high end of that range at more than $49,000 a year. The women’s tennis coach’s salary comes in $4,400 lower. On the lower end of that range, Grambling’s bowling coach makes $40,000 a year, University of New Orleans’ golf coach makes nearly $38,000 and McNeese State’s tennis coach makes more than $37,000. The lowest-paid head coach position at LSU is for beach volleyball — $75,000 base pay, $80,000 total pay. Smaller universities offer smaller salaries. LSU of Alexandria offers seven National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-sanctioned sports, with most head coach salaries ranging from $33,280 (women’s tennis) to $40,040 (women’s basketball), according to the school. Outliers at LSUA are the $65,000 salary for men’s basketball Coach Larry Cordaro and $72,800 for Athletic Director Adam Jonson.
