SPRINGFIELD, La.-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team entered the final round
of the 2009 Carter Plantation Intercollegiate in third place, 15-strokes back
of the leader Texas State, but used a tournament-record round of 281 to close
the gap and take second place.
Louisiana’s 281 in the final round was the lowest in tournament history,
besting the previous record of 285 set by tournament-host Southeastern
Louisiana in 2007 and Middle Tennessee in 2008.
Texas State shot just well enough to out-last the Cajuns, carding a four-over
par round of 292 to claim the tournament title. Texas State’s Jeff Gerlich
set a new tournament record at 208 (previous record of 210 by Chris Stroud of
Lamar in 2004) to claim the individual title.
Louisiana had four players place in the top 10 of the tournament, including
Philipp Fendt who finished the tournament in third place. The third place
finish was the highest finish for the true freshman, topping his previous
best of fifth at the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. Fendt
carded a final round of three-under par (69) to tie his season-low, set
previously at the Squire Creek Invitational in Ruston, La. For his efforts,
Fendt was named to the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate All-Tournament
Team.
Senior Dustin Petit shot a two-under par round of 70 in the final day of
competition to place seventh in the tournament. The two-under par round
marked the fourth time this season Petit carded a round below par.
One stroke back of Petit was Devin Carrey and Thomas Petts who finished in a
tie for eighth place. Carrey carded his eighth round below par on the year
with a two-under par round of 70, while Petts shot even par 72 for his second
top 10 finish of the year.
Rounding out the scoring for the Cajuns were Kyle Pritchard and Mark
Brockhurst. Pritchard carded a final round of four-over par (76), while
Brockhurst, competing as an individual, shot an 81.
The Ragin’ Cajuns golf team with hit the links on April 12-14 as the team
heads to Jonesboro, Ark. for the Arkansas State Red Wolves Classic at Sage
Meadows Golf Club.
