Golf: Noto Notches Win at David Toms Intercollegiate with 69-71-68Golf: Noto Notches Win at David Toms Intercollegiate with 69-71-68
Senior Andrew Noto became the second straight Ragin’ Cajuns golfer to finish atop the leaderboard in 2011 after storming into the lead with a final round score of 68 to win the David Toms Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport, La.
"I can’t tell how awesome of a 54-hole performance Andrew had," said head golf coach Theo Sliman. "He never got caught up in the results and it really was like clockwork the way he played today. I couldn’t be more proud of him." Noto finished the tournament with a 54-hole score of 208 (-8) for his first-ever individual championship. The Luling, La. native entered the day just two strokes off the lead and managed to take medalist honors by four shots finishing ahead of Kevin Hesbois of Lamar who placed second at 212 (-4). "It was a fun day for me," Noto said. "I was just focused on the process of finishing strong. With the bad conditions you can get ahead of yourself, and I was able to play well." "I’ve liked David Toms since I was a kid, and it means a lot to me to win a tournament with his name on it. It’s definitely an honor to have a guy that’s won a PGA tournament hand me the championship trophy for his tournament." On the day, Noto birdied eight of the 19 holes and managed to play near perfect despite strong winds and cool temperatures. The Cajuns finished the event in a tie for fifth overall after carding a 54-hole score of 878 (14). "Unfortunately, as a team we didn’t compete like we would have liked," Sliman said. "We didn’t have everyone clicking on all cylinders. For us to be successful we have to have everyone playing well." Philipp Fendt posted his third straight top 10 finish after ending the day in a tie for 10th overall at one-over (217). Brandt Garon and Yohann Vora rounded out the scoring for UL as Garon finished in a tie for 41st overall (227), while Vora finished in a tie for 50th (232). Oklahoma took the team championship at the David Toms Intercollegiate posting the only score under-par at 862 (-2). Lamar (872), SMU (874), LSU (875), Louisiana (878) and Tulsa (878) rounded out the top 5. With the David Toms Intercollegiate now in the books, the Cajuns golf team has completed the fall portion of the schedule and will break for the winter before returning to action on Feb. 13-14 when they travel to San Antonio, Texas for the Oak Hills Invitational.
