Golf: Magnus Surges On Final Day Of Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate

Thomas Strandemo

MOBILE, Ala. – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns senior golfer Haraldur Magnus posted a strong third round score of 4-under par (68) on Tuesday at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate to finish in a tie for 17th with a 54-hole score of even par (216) at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

Magnus posted the second lowest score of the day and did not have a blemish in his final 12 holes posting four birdies during that stretch. The Reykjavik, Iceland native has now posted six top 25 performances this season and 22 in his career.

Junior Fernando Cruz Valle finished one stroke ahead of Magnus in a tie for 15th at 1-under (215) after carding a 71 (-1) in the final round. The top 25 finish is the sixth of the season for Cruz Valle and the 18th of his career.

"It was nice to see those two step up in the final round and put themselves in a good position at the finish," head coach Theo Sliman said. "It was also promising to see Andres (Navarrete) play with some determination and post a round in red numbers. This is obviously not what we were looking for from a team aspect. This is team golf, and even though it’s good to talk about individual performances, we need to see all five guys step up and contribute to the team. Hopefully these individual performances can spark a complete team performance when we host the Louisiana Classics next week."

Navarrete was one of four Cajuns on the day to post a sub par round tallying a 71 (-1) in the final round to finish in a tie for 58th at 9-over (225).

Ryan Desormeaux carded his first round under par for the Ragin’ Cajuns posting a 70 (-1) in the final round of the USA Individual Tournament. Desormeaux finished in a tie for 13th in the individual tournament with a three round score of 9-over (222).

No. 4 Auburn was the wire-to-wire team champion with a score of 26-under (838). Chattanooga (-12, 852), No. 2 Wake Forest (-8, 856), Kansas State (-6, 858) and Georgia State (-5, 859) round out the top 5 teams.

Auburn’s Michael Johnson also claimed the individual title with a 54-hole score of 14-under (202).

The Cajuns return home for the 31st Annual Louisiana Classics hosted at Oakbourne Country Club Feb. 29-March 1. Admission to the tournament is free.
