Golf: Magnus Records Strong Outing At British Amateur Championship
MAGNUS RECORDS STRONG OUTING AT BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
ROYAL PORTRUSH, Ireland – Haraldur Magnus added to an impressive summer for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns golf team as he reached the quarterfinals of the 119th British Amateur Championship over the weekend.
Magnus, who will be a junior in 2014-15, dropped a 7-and-6 contest to eventual champion Bradley Neil of Scotland in the quarterfinals. With the win, Neil earned a spot in next month’s British Open, the 2015 US Open and a traditional invitation to the Masters.
Looking to become the first golfer from Iceland to win the championship, Magnus opened play in the 288-player field as he finished tied with Neil in stroke play at 3-over-par 144 to advance to match play.
Magnus, ranked No. 197 in the world amateur rankings, opened match play on Thursday with a 4-and-3 victory over Denmark’s Nicolai Tinning before securing a one-stroke victory over England’s Jordan Smith in Friday’s third round action. In fourth round play, Magnus earned a 2-and-1 victory over England’s Paul Kinnear, moving ahead for good with a par on No. 11 before posting a birdie on No. 12.
That set up a rematch with Neil, the No. 38-ranked golfer in the world amateur rankings. Playing on the par-70 Royal Portrush course, Neil birdied four of the first five holes and six of the first 10 to secure the victory.
"I’m really pleased and proud of the way Hadi competed in getting into the elite status at the British Amateur," head coach Theo Sliman said. "It is nice to see a good handful of our guys competing and being very productive over the summer.
"You hate to see Hadi lose, but he gained a lot of confidence competing in the British Amateur and facing the eventual champion. He will be able to come off of this experience and I feel that he will be a definite leader for our program."
Magnus’ performance has been part of an impressive showing this summer by members of the Ragin’ Cajuns golf team.
Thomas Strandemo became the first Ragin’ Cajuns player in Sliman’s tenure to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship that will be held July 14-19 in Newton, Kansas. Freshman Fernando Cruz Valle earned a 23rd-place finish earlier this month at the 2014 Mexican Amateur while Ross Davis turned in a strong performance with a sixth-place effort at the Louisiana Amateur held earlier this month at Le Triomphe Golf and Country Club.
