Golf: Magnus Leads Cajuns Golf At Bayou City Collegiate Championship

 
HUMBLE, Texas – Junior Haraldur Magnus recorded his 13th career top 25 performance on Sunday as the Ragin’ Cajuns golf team finished in 12th with a score of 28-over (892) at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship hosted at  the6,982-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Houston.
 
"I’m somewhat disappointed in the results after a poor performance in San Antonio, but there were some good things we will take away from this weekend," head coach Theo Sliman said. "I think we could have had a better showing today from a score standpoint, but I am glad that we didn’t pack it in and fought hard till the end of the round. There is still plenty of good golf left in this team, but we have to apply the lessons learned and continue to work hard."
 
Magnus posted back-to-back rounds of 71 (-1) to move up 20 spots finishing in a tie for 20th at 1-over (217). The Reykjavik, Iceland native had only two blemishes and three birdies in each of his final two rounds.
 
As a team, Louisiana carded its lowest round of the tournament in the final round registering a score of 3-over (291) in the final 18 holes as all five Cajuns posted a score of 74 or better.  
 
No. 9 South Carolina held off Sam Houston State to win the team title at 14-under (850) edging the Bearkats by two strokes. Sam Houston fired a combined score of 11-under (277) in the final round.
 
No. 8 Baylor (-4, 860), No. 38 Arkansas (-3, 861) and host No. 30 Houston (�4, 868) round out the top five teams.
 
Zach Cabra of Sam Houston State tallied a tournament-low score of 7-under (65) on the final day to captured individual medalist honors with an overall score of 8-under (208).
 
Sophomore Fernando Cruz Valle finished in a tie for 47th at 7-over (223), while Christian Verrougstraete was one shot back in a tie for 55th after carding a 73 in the final round.
 
Thomas Strandemo and Louis Kelly capped the scoring for Louisiana as Strandemo placed in a tie for 78th at 15-over (231) and Kelly ended the day in a tie for 83rd at 19-over (235).
