Golf: Magnus Claims Individual Title At Border Olympics
LAREDO, Texas – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns senior golfer Haraldur Magnus notched his second career tournament victory carding a 36-hole score of 10-under par (134) at the rain-shortened Border Olympics hosted at the par-72, 7,125-yard Laredo Country Club. Magnus had just two blemishes in the two rounds posting 12 birdies during the tournament. The senior notched both a tournament-low and career-low round of 66 (-6) in the opening round before backing it up with a 68 (-4) in the final round. Magnus’ score of 10-under is his best career finish in relation to par, besting his score of 6-under at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate this past fall. With the win, Magnus now has 12 top 10 finishes in his career including six top 5 performances. His other tournament victory came at the Memphis Intercollegiate in 2014. "I am pleased with the competitiveness displayed by the team, and I am extremely proud of the win by Haddi (Haraldur)," head coach Theo Sliman said. "The only Cajun to win this event previously was Craig Perks in 1990. To have his name forever sketched in the history of this event is very special for our program, and a huge accomplishment for Haddi. This is a big boost of confidence for him as he embarks on the final stretch of his college career." As a team, the Ragin’ Cajuns finished in a tie for fourth at 7-under (569) with Sam Houston State. No. 26 Baylor won the team title with a 36-hole score of 20-under (556). No. 37 Houston finished second at 12-under (564) and Rice was third carding a two-round score of 9-under (567). "As a team, this week was a good step in the right direction. However, we will need the back of the lineup to rise to the performance of our leaders in order for us to be competitive come the SBC Championship," Sliman added. "I have a lot of confidence in this group collectively, yet we need to continue to learn and apply on a daily basis." Junior Ragnar Gardarsson posted his fourth top 25 finish of the season bouncing back from a first round 75 (3) to register a 68 (-4) in the second round to place in a tie for 22nd at 1-under (143). Gardarrson played bogey-free golf in his final 14 holes sinking six birdies to close out the tournament and move up 38 spots in the final round. Fernando Cruz Valle was one stroke back of Gardasson in a tie for 29th at even par (144) tallying back-to-back rounds of 72 (E). Triston Elston and Andres Navarrete wrapped up the scoring for the Cajuns with Elston placing in a tie for 67th at 5-over (149), while Navarrete ended the tournament in a tie for 83rd at 8-over (152). Louisiana returns to action March 21-22 at the Lone Star Invitational hosted at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas.
