Golf: Magnus And Strandemo Finish Strong At Reunion Intercollegiate

MADISON, Miss. – Sophomores Haraldur Magnus and Thomas Strandemo became the first pair of Ragin’ Cajuns golfers to finish in the top 10 of a tournament since the 2012 season as the duo finished in a tie for seventh on Tuesday at the Reunion Classic held at the Reunion Golf and Country Club.

“I’m very proud of the mental toughness that Ross and Haraldur showed to overcome tough conditions and finish strong,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “The conditions today were extremely tough with a strong wind that blew all day and really tested players.”

Magnus bounced back from a 75 (3) in the first round to card a score of 71 (-1) in the final round to finish with a 36-hole score of 2-over par (146). The 71 in the second round marked the eighth time this year that Magnus has posted a round under par. Strandemo also recorded a good second round with a score of even par (72) to also finish at 2-over (146).

The top 10 finish is the fourth for Magnus in the last six events. A native of Reykjavik, Iceland, Magnus has placed in the top 25 in all but one spring event and eight times on the year.

Louisiana finished in ninth as a team at 30-over (606). All 15 teams in the field posted a score over par in the event.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get the result that we were looking for,” Sliman added. “This result is in no way a representation of this team. This is a very good team, and we still haven’t seen us play our best golf yet. We had to battle tough weather conditions and delays over the last two days, and that made it very difficult for all of the teams that participated. I am not in the least bit worried about this team. I know the quality of our guys and we are going to bounce back strong next week.”

Mississippi State placed first at 12-over (588) after posting the lowest team score of the event in the second round at 4-over (292). No. 15 Vanderbilt (16, 592), No. 10 Houston (17, 593), Ole Miss (20, 596) and WKU (25, 601) round out the top 5 teams.

Pep Angles of Central Arkansas finished atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under (141) shooting a final round score of 68 (-4).

Ross Davis finished the day in a tie for 48th at 12-over (156), while Fernando Cruz Valle ended up two stroked back of Davis in a tie for 52nd at 14-over (158).

Christian Verrougstraete rounded out the scoring for the Ragin’ Cajuns placing in 73rd at 25-over (169).

The Cajuns return to action next week as they head to the Sun Belt Conference Championships from April 21-23 in Saucier, Miss.
