Golf: Garon Pays Ultimate Tribute at Patriot Invitational
Junior Ragin’ Cajuns golfer Brandt Garon was one of 82 Collegiate All-Americans to participate in the Inaugural Patriot All-America Invitational on the Gold Course at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
“Obviously it was a huge honor for both Brandt and the athletic department to be a participant in the Inaugural Patriot All-American,” head golf coach Theo Sliman said. “This was not only an opportunity for Brandt to compete against the best college golfers in the country, but also great way for him to give back to the men and women who protect our freedom every day.”
Garon finished the event in a tie for 23rd at two-over par after carding a three day total of 215 (71-72-72).
“I’m very proud of Brandt’s consistent play on such a large stage,” Sliman added. “I firmly believe that this experience will help condition him to continue to be an asset for us in the spring.”
To show support for Folds of Honor, each golfer carried a commemorative PING golf bag bearing the name of a fallen soldier from the community in which they live or attend school. That bag will be auctioned off to benefit the families of the fallen soldiers through Folds of Honor.
“It meant a lot to both Brandt and I to have the university represented at an event that pays tribute to the ultimate All-American in my eyes – the soldiers of the United States military,” Sliman said. “How fitting it was for Brandt to carry the name of a fallen Louisiana soldier. This aspect of the event truly was special to Brandt.”
Garon’s bag featured the name of Torey J. Dantzler.
Dantzler, a native of Columbia, La., was a Private first class in the United States Army. He was killed on July 22, 2004 at the age of 22 while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He left behind his wife Serena and two children, Kayla and Torey Jr.
Alabama’s Cory Whitsett won the 2011 Patriot All-America at Wigwam Golf Club after posting a three round total of 14-under-par (199).
