Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team jumped ahead of nationally-ranked Kent State to claim third in the 26th Annual Louisiana Classics in the final round on Tuesday morning at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette. Setting the pace for the Cajuns, Philipp Fendt tied a career-low score of 212, finishing tied for fourth overall. UL was tied for most of the day with Kent State, who came into the tournament ranked 37th nationally. The Ragin’ Cajuns finished six over par, a stroke better than the Golden Flashes, to total a spring season-low 870 (?6) in the three-round tournament. Louisiana also finished ahead of No. 38 Tulsa, which compiled a score of 884 (?20). Ahead of the Cajuns were tournament team champion No. 6 Illinois (854, -10) and runner-up No. 8 LSU (860, -4). Kent State’s John Hahn was the individual champion with a score of 206, totaling 10 under par in three rounds. Four of the five Cajuns individuals finished inside the top-30. "I am extremely proud of the guys," noted third-year head coach Theo Sliman. "They walked the fairways and competed amongst some highly ranked teams and finished ahead of a lot of them." Fendt, ranked 96th nationally according to GolfStat.com, tied a career-low 212 (-4) in the tournament. On Tuesday, the junior shot two-under par (70) to finish in a tie for fourth, earning All-Tournament honors. The score of 212 tied Fendt’s previous-best recorded at the Arkansas State Red Wolf Classic on April 12-13, 2010. Fendt finished ahead of five nationally ranked players, including defending NCAA Individual Champion Scott Langley (No. 11) from Illinois. "Philipp is a special guy," said Sliman. "He has done everything that has been asked of him. His hard work off the course is a testament to his hardwork on the course. You always like to see guys that work hard and reap the benefits. He is proof that hard work pays off." Weninger closed out the tourney three over par on Tuesday morning. The freshman carded a 75, totaling a career-low 217 (?1) score in the two-day competition. Weninger also notched another career-best with the 11th place finish out of 84 competitors. Petts shot his second 73 (?1) in the tournament, finishing with a score of 220 (?4) and earning 21st overall. "I was very proud of Thomas Petts who hasn’t been in the lineup this spring," said Sliman. "He stepped up and played some really consistent golf." Junior Andrew Noto went four over par on day three, finishing with a 76. Noto finished 222 (?6), tying for 30th the overall. Ethan Savoy finished day two with a 75 (?3). The St. Thomas More product finished with a score of 228 (?12), tying for 62nd. Individually, Kelsey Angelle finished with a 226 (?10) for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Garrett Westbrook posted a 233 (?17), while Ashton Abel notched a 237 (?21). Sliman noted that the Cajuns will take a few days of rest before preparing for the First Tee Collegiate Classic (Little Rock, Ark.) in three weeks. "I think the team is very proud of themselves," said Sliman. "It’s been a long stretch for us. We need to create our game plan on how we are going to finish the season. Our conference in golf is getting extremely competitive with Middle Tennessee and North Texas inside the top-40. We have a lot of work to do to prepare for the Sun Belt Conference championship."
