LAFAYETTE-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golfer Philipp Fendt was recently named
the No. 1 amateur golfer in Austria after a fourth place finish at the
Slovenia Open.
The Open was an Alps Tour event, which is a third level European Tour –
comparable to the United States’ Adams or Hooters Tour. His fourth place
finish propelled Fendt into the top spot in the Austrian Amateur Rankings and
earned him a spot in the Kaernten Golf Open presented by Markus Brier on the
second level European Tour – European Challenge Tour. The event will take
place in Klagenfurt on Thursday, June 4 through Sunday, June 7. Tournament
coverage is available at www.europeantour.com.
Fendt, who was the Sun Belt Conference’s Freshman of the Year, was the top
finisher among amateurs at the Slovenia Open, finishing the tournament at
five under par. He closed out the tournament 13 strokes back of first, but
was just three strokes back of second and two strokes out of third.
Fendt closed out the first round with a one under-par round of 70. Fendt
shot back-to-back rounds of 69 to close out the tournament to finish fourth.
For the tournament, Fendt carded 45 holes of par or better, including 14
birdies. Fendt carded just nine bogies in his 54 holes with just three
bogies on the front nine in three rounds of competition.
