LAREDO, Texas – Senior Philipp Fendt battled tough conditions to post his best career finish on Saturday placing in second at the Border Olympics hosted by the University of Houston at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
“I am very proud of Philipp,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “That is the best round of golf I have seen him play in college. As difficult as the conditions were, for him to play a bogey free round of gold is incredible. I really think he is only getting better and better each day out.”
The Vienna, Austria native finished just two strokes back of Lamar’s MJ Daffue for the tournament championship tallying a three-day total of three-under par (213). Fendt carded his lowest round of the event on Saturday shooting a 69 despite 30 mph gusts in Laredo.
The senior has placed in the top-10 in six of the eight tournaments in 2011-12 and has finished in the top-3 seven times in his career.
“To finish in second at the Border Olympics means a lot to me especially with the tough conditions,” Fendt said. “Playing bogey free was really tough, and I think that was the best round I have played in my life.”
Fendt was only one of two players to post an error free round on Saturday as the senior settled in and knocked down some clutch puts on his final four holes.
“The last four holes I played today were the toughest on the course,” Fendt said. “I just tried to stick to my game plan and not get too aggressive. Luckily I was able to make some big puts and finish the round bogey free.”
The Ragin’ Cajuns finished in a tie for fifth as a team with Louisiana Tech after registering a three-day total of 900 (+36).
“It’s obvious that we did not perform up to our expectations,” Sliman stated. “We are coming home unhappy even though we finished in the top third of the field. We have a lot of work to do. We only have two tournaments left before conference, and if we want to meet our goals as a team we have to get better.”
Yohann Vora had the second best finish on the weekend for the Cajuns placing in a tie for 42nd at 12-over par (228). Sophomore Chris Weninger placed in a tie for 50th at 14-over par (230), while Andrew Noto capped the scoring for UL in a tie for 62nd at 17-over par (233).
Lamar held on to win the tournament championship registering a score of six-over par (870). No.31 Baylor (875), Houston (888), Iowa State (893), Louisiana (900) and Louisiana Tech (900) round out the top five.
The Cajuns have a week off before heading to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU National Invitational at the University Club on March 31-April 1.
