University of Louisiana’s Philipp Fendt is making his presence known at the 2011 British Amateur Championship, reaching the second match play round at Hillside Golf Club in Southport, England.
During two rounds of the stroke play qualifying stage, Fendt totaled a 3-over-par 146 which tied him for 36th out of the 288 golfers in the field. Fendt carded a 2-under-par, 70 during his second round of stroke play held at Hillside Golf Club on Tuesday. The performance helped him bounce back from a five-over-par, 76 showing in the first round held at Hesketh Golf Club on Monday. Fendt’s finish placed him among the 64 golfers who advanced to match play which began Wednesday and will conclude Saturday. Fendt is competing in the Upper Half of the match play bracket and opened play Wednesday morning with a 2-and-1 victory over Victor Flatau of Sweden. He will square off against Paul Cutler of Portstewart, Northern Ireland Thursday at 8:15 a.m. (BST). Golfers from 35 countries are participating in the tournament, which is in its 116th year. The event includes some of the top-ranked amateurs in the world. The winner of the match play portion of the event will receive a spot in this year’s British Open Championship held July 14-17 at Royal St George’s, as well as an invitation to the 2012 Masters at Augusta National. The Vienna, Austria, native averaged 72.16 strokes over 32 rounds this past season, garnering five Top 10 finishes and 10 Top 25 showings.
