Golf: Elston Leads Ragin’ Cajuns To Split At Jerry Weeks Match Play

Louisiana heads back to Magnolia State for Old Waverly Collegiate Championships

LAFAYETTE – Senior Triston Elston picked up a pair of victories and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns golf team earned a split during the third annual Jerry Weeks Match Play Tournament on Monday at the Hattiesburg Country Club.

 
Louisiana, playing in the one-day, four-team event that featured Sun Belt Conference rival South Alabama plus Conference USA foes Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech, opened the day with a 3-2 setback to the Jaguars before defeating host USM, 3-2, in the consolation match.
 
Elston, who improved to 5-1 overall in match play in the three-year tournament, opened the day for Louisiana defeating South Alabama’s Peter Staalbo at No. 5, 1 up, before claiming a convincing 7&6 win over Brian Richards of Southern Miss at No. 2.
 
Micah Goulas picked up a 2&1 win for Louisiana over USM’s Walker Kesterson at No. 1 while Bjorn Gudjonsson and Charlie Flynn each halved their matches against USM’s Matt Lorenz and Joey Kirkland respectively.
 
Gudjonsson earned a victory in Louisiana’s opening match against South Alabama, defeating Jacob Hatter, 4&3.
 
Louisiana will head back to the state of Mississippi for its final tuneup prior to the Sun Belt Conference Championships later this month in Miramar Beach, Fla. The Ragin’ Cajuns will head to West Point, Miss., to compete in the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on April 15-16 at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
