Golf: Cruz Valle Named SBC Freshman Of The Year; Two Cajuns Land On All-Conference List
NEW ORLEANS – Freshman Fernando Valle Cruz was named the 2014 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year as two Ragin’ Cajuns golfers were tabbed to the all-conference golf teams, the league office announced on Thursday.
“I’m very proud and pleased with Fernando being named the Freshman of the Year,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “He had a very solid freshman campaign. Fernando had a little lull in the spring, but he showed a lot of grit to bounce back at the Sun Belt Tournament to finish strong.”
Cruz Valle is the second golfer under Sliman to earn Freshman of the Year honors joining Philipp Fendt who earned the honor in 2008. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Cruz Valle recorded a 73.39 scoring average in 33 rounds. The freshman posted 11 rounds of par or better and finished in the top 5 in four events this year.
Sophomore Haraldur Magnus joins Cruz Valle on the all-conference list. Magnus was one of six golfers to earn first team All-Sun Belt honors, while Cruz Valle was named to the second team.
“To have two guys on the all-conference teams as underclassmen makes me very proud as a coach,” Sliman added. “It shows a lot about the future of the program and the quality of those two guys. There is no doubt that Harladur is one of the best players in the conference. He had a very strong spring and really came into his own down the stretch.”
Magnus finished the year with a team-best 73.24 stroke average in 34 rounds. He carded 12 rounds of par or better and finished in the top 25 in six of seven spring tournaments including a win at the Memphis Intercollegiate. Magnus finished inside the top 10 in four events.
