Golf: Chip Shots – Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament – Condolences

Re-posted on June 11, 2014

Dan McDonald, The Advertiser, June 4, 2014

HALL OF FAME GOLF: Entries are still being accepted for the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame’s annual Celebrity Pro-Am Scramble set for Friday, June 20, at Oak Wing in Alexandria. Among this year’s state Hall of Fame inductees is legendary Ragin’ Cajun basketball coach Beryl Shipley, who is being inducted posthumously along with six other honorees, and participation in the golf tournament is a good way to honor Coach Shipley and have the chance to play with some of the state’s premier sports figures.
The tournament has a 9 a.m. registration and a 10 a.m. tee time, and each five-person team will include a celebrity captain as sixth player. Entry fee is $150 per player or $750 per team and includes tee gifts, a souvenir Hall of Fame golf shirt and cap, food before, during and after play, beverages on the course, cart, range balls and contests to be held on the course.

Entry deadline is Monday, June 16, and entries may be sent to the La. Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, 500 Front St., Natchitoches, LA 71457 or FAXed to (318) 238-4258. VISA and MasterCard are accepted along with checks, and more information on the tournament is available at (318) 238-4255 or at www.lasportshall.com.

CONDOLENCES: Best wishes and heartfelt condolences go out to former Le Triomphe head professional and long-time Acadiana golf community member David Church on the passing of his father. Former Ragin’ Cajun basketball All-American Dean Church passed away on May 27 after a lengthy illness.
Just like his son, Dean Church was a true gentleman and an ambassador for his university and his community. He will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues.
Any interested in contributions may do so in Dean Church’s name to the Beryl Shipley Mended Hearts Scholarship. Checks should be made out to the UL Foundation, and mailed to the UL Development Office, P.O. Box 43410, Lafayette, LA 70504.
