Golf: Chip Shots – hall of Famer Harold Porter finally broke into the winner’s circleDan McDonald, Daily Advertiser, June 23, 2012 Notes and information from around the Acadiana golf scene: SPEAKING OF THE HALL: Hall of Famer Harold Porter finally broke into the winner’s circle at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament Friday at Oak Wing in Alexandria. Porter was captain of a team that included Curt Picard, Billy Dressler, Jason Self, Toby Pousson and Doug Quienalty which posted a 22-under-par 50 to win by three strokes over the rest of the 20-team field. One of this year’s Hall of Fame inductees, former LSU football standout and long-time NFL coach Terry Robiskie, was captain of the third-place team that included Ken Antee, Randy McFarlin, Greg Eddlemon, Gerald Adams and Brett Crossno. USSSA GATOR: Kristian Fontenot made his first USSSA Junior Golf Tour appearance a success last week, taking top honors in the boys 13-14 division of the Gator Classic held at Copper Mill in Zachary. Fontenot posted an 11-over-par 151 for the two rounds, tying for the third-best score overall on the weekend. Dylan Domingue of Duson was second at 165 and Cameron Hagel of Broussard third at 172 in the boys 13-14 division. Jamison Thomassee of Opelousas carded a six-over 146 and Micah Goulas of New Iberia had a seven-over 147 to finish second and third respectively in the boys 15-18 division. Roberto Espinosa of Arnaudville also hit the winners’ circle at the Gator event, winning the boys 9-11 division with a 103 score over two nine-hole rounds. The USSSA Junior Tour wraps up its Norman Swanner Memorial event today at LaTour in Matthews, and the next event for that tour will be a local event. The Governor’s Games/USSSA State Championships are scheduled July 14-15 at Le Triomphe. BACK IN ACTION: Lafayette’s Brian Rowell earned a spot in this week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open on the Nationwide Tour, but didn’t make the weekend field. Rowell, who qualified for the U.S. Open and played at the Olympic Club last week, carded a 74-72—146 score to miss the cut. Rowell had taken that spot at the Nationwide stop by being the leading money winner on the Adams Pro Golf Tour this year. He currently leads that tour’s money list ($34,577) and the Player of the Year points race through seven tournaments, during which he has two wins and five-top-five finishes. His next outing on that tour is the Garland Classic in Garland, Texas. VIEUX CHENES SENIORS: The team of Jim Kerin, Gerald Reaux, Roger Ainsworth and Walter Ward posted an eight-under-par 64 to claim top honors Thursday at the monthly Vieux Chenes Men’s Senior Golf Association tournament at Les Vieux Chenes. The event was postponed a week after rains washed out the June 14 date. Closest to the hole honors went to Bill Williams, twice on both No. 3 and No. 17, Dennis Leger on No. 7 and Kenny Chitty on No. 12. The next scheduled event is Thursday, July 12, and any senior players looking to join the group may contact the club at 837-1159. LGA GOLF: The deadline for entry in the Louisiana Golf Association’s annual Junior Amateur is Tuesday, July 3, for the event to be held July 11-13 at Links on the Bayou in Alexandria. That event is open to male players between age 10-17 (must have turned 10 and must not have turned 18 by July 13), and players may choose to participate in age-group competition (36 holes) or compete for the overall title (54 holes). The event is open to the first 160 players to enter, either on the LGA’s web site at www.lgagolf.org or by calling (337) 265-3938. Entry fee is $75 for the event. In addition to the tournament, the LGA will stage both a rules clinic during a hamburger cookout the evening prior to play, and will have a panel discussion featuring many of the state’s college coaches (including UL’s Theo Sliman) on how to prepare for potential collegiate careers. MIKE OPEN: Spots are filling rapidly for the area’s largest golf tournament, with the annual "Mike Open" set for Monday-Tuesday, July 16-17 at Les Vieux Chenes. The event is hosted annually by district attorney Mike Harson, and is a major fundraiser for local charities and especially youth groups throughout the Acadiana area. The event has both morning and afternoon tee times on both Monday and Tuesday and normally fills its 576-player capacity each year (144 players each for the four rounds), so players who plan to take part should submit entries as soon as possible. Tournament organizer Ken Franquez said the afternoon rounds, which are more popular, are already nearly full. Entry information is available at Les Vieux Chenes or from Franquez at kfranq@cox.net or at 207-4288. PENECOSTAL GOLF: The Pentecostals of Lafayette will stage their inaugural TPOL Classic next Saturday at Abbeville Country Club. The four-person scramble has an 8 a.m. shogtun start with registration beginning at 7 a.m. and prizes to the winning team, long drive and closest to the hole. Information and registrations are available at www.tpolchurch.com, from tyler@tpolchurch.com or 981-9300. ![]()
