Golf: Cajuns Finish Srong at SBC Championships + Trio Tabbed All-Conference
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team put together its best round of the week to finish in 4th place at the Sun Belt Championships in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Every Cajun posted scores of even par or better as UL combined for a final round total of 280 (-8) to finish with a score of 880.
The Cajuns’ final round score of 280 was the Sun Belt Championships’ lowest combined score for the three-day event. It’s the second straight year that UL has turned in a tournament-low score on the final day. Last year, the Cajuns posted a final tally of 283 and finished fourth overall. Sophomore Philip Fendt shot 69 (-3) to finish the Championships at 1-over par and tied for 6th place. Senior Kyle Pritchard posted back-to-back rounds of 71 to finish alongside Fendt with a total of 217. Sophomore Andrew Noto also posted a low score of 69 (-3) to bounce back and finish in 15th place. Thomas Disch shot even par to finish in 29th place with a total of 226. Mark Brockurst fired off his best round of the week, 71, to finish with a score of 230 South Alabama claimed the championship with a score of 872. Middle Tennessee and New Orleans barely beat out the Cajuns for second and third place overall with scores of 878 and 879, respectively. UNO’s Oscar Zetterwall finished at 8-under par to claim the individual title. Trio Tabbed All SBC Conference After an impressive performance at the Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championships, three Cajuns were named to the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golf All-Conference Team. Senior Kyle Pritchard and sophomores Philipp Fendt and Andrew Noto were presented with the honor on Wednesday afternoon.
It was the first time since the 2004-05 season that three Cajuns earned the distinction. It is the second straight honor for Pritchard. The senior closes out his collegiate career, having played in 37 tournaments with 14 top-25 finishes. His best finish came at the Red Wolf Classic last season where he earned co-medalist honors. "It’s great honor for Kyle in his senior year," said UL head golf coach Theo Sliman, "To play his last tournament they way he did was just awesome. He took the initiative and stepped up today. I can’t say enough about this young man." It is the first all-conference award for Fendt and Noto. Last year, Fendt was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Both golfers were the top-finisher for UL in every tournament this season. Fendt led the Cajuns in nine tournaments and Fendt finished as the top Cajun golfer in three events. "It is impressive to earn the honor as sophomores," added Sliman. "This is a huge positive for their futures. It shows a lot about their performance this season and what is to come." 2010 SUN BELT CONFERENCE MEN’S GOLF ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR COACH OF THE YEAR ![]()
