Devin Carrey finished in the top 10 for the 13th time in his UL career and the fourth time this season.

NEW ORLEANS-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns completed their first tournament of the spring season with a top 10 finish at the Mardi Gras Invitational at the TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La.

The Cajuns began the day in 10th place and shot a team score of 298 to improve to eighth place overall.  Louisiana finished the tournament with an overall score of 908 after three rounds.  The Cajuns, who finished the first round in 12th, moved up two spots each of the following rounds to finish in the top 10.

Louisiana has finished in the top 10 in five of the six tournaments they have played during the 2008-09 season.

Tournament-host New Orleans claimed the 2009 Mardi Gras Invitational crown finishing the tournament 19 strokes over par.  Southeastern Louisiana finished four strokes back, taking second place, while Mercer posted a three-round score of 890 for third.  West Florida and St. Mary’s (Calif.) rounded out the top five.

Devin Carrey was the top performer for the Cajuns.  The senior carded a three-over par final round of 75 to tie for ninth in the tournament.  The top 10 finish was the 13th of Carrey’s career at UL and the fourth time this season the senior has cracked the top 10 in a tournament.  Dating back to fall competition, Carrey has posted three consecutive top 10 finishes for the Cajuns.

Freshman Philipp Fendt and sophomore Thomas Petts both put together solid rounds for the Cajuns on the final day of competition.  Fendt used a solid round of even par to finish the Mardi Gras Invite in a tie for 22nd.  Petts saved his best round of the tournament for last as he carded a final round, one under-par round of 71.

Petts and Carrey were the only two UL golfers to post scores in the red.  Carrey posted a second round score of 68 (-4).  The one under-par 71 was the first sub-par round for Petts this season.  Petts finished his rookie season with the Cajuns with four rounds under par, including a low round of 68.

Rounding out the scoring for Louisiana were Dustin Petit and Kyle Pritchard.  The duo struggled on the final day of competition, carding scores of 80 and 82, respectively.

The Ragin’ Cajuns golf team will be back in action on February 16-17 as they travel to Houston, Texas for the Rice Intercollegiate at the Westwood Golf Club.
