Golf: Cajuns Claim Moe O’™Brien Match Play Championship

Moe O'Brien Match Play Champs

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns golf team notched wins against Southeastern Louisiana and McNeese State to claim the Moe O’Brien Match Play Championship on Sunday. The event was hosted at the par-72, 6,763-yard Lake Charles Country Club.

"I really saw that competitive fire get ignited today in our guys," head coach Theo Sliman said. "This is a different kind of event where you have teammates playing in the same groups, so it was neat to see them pulling for one another and really showing a lot of support and grit. I feel like this was just the kind of result we needed to carry us over to the spring season. My hope is that this championship has shown our team the success we can have in the spring if we can continue to come together as a team and play with the same spirit and emotion that we displayed today."

The Cajuns picked up a 3-0-2 win against the Lions to start off the day. Ross Davis defeated Christopher Carstensen, 3&2, while Haraldur Magnus gave Louisiana its second win of the morning taking down Baptiste Courtachon, 3&1. Senior Louis Kelly clinched the victory for the Ragin’ Cajuns finishing 1Up on Grady Brame.

Fernando Cruz Valle and Thomas Strandemo each ended the morning round all square.

In the afternoon championship round against McNeese State, the Ragin’ Cajuns closed the match out early as Davis, Strandemo and Cruz Valle each won 3&2. Kelly finished the round all square, and Magnus was handed the lone setback of the day falling 3&2 to Bob MacIntyre.

Louisiana opens play in the spring on Feb. 9-10 at the Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
