Golf: Cajuns Card Two Top-10 Finishes
Louisiana’s Philipp Fendt finished fourth overall after carding a three-under round of 69 and Andrew Noto shot a six-under 66 to finish tied for seventh in the third round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Tuesday. As a team, the Ragin’ Cajuns golf team finished in a tie for 5th with a three-round total of 855.
“It was a good day with a remarkable finish,” said UL head coach Theo Sliman. “The first tournament of the season puts you in check and lets you evaluate your game. Now we know where we need to improve. Every time we tee it up this season, we want to win it.”
Fendt’s three-round total of 206 (-10), was a new personal best for the sophomore, shaving 10 strokes off his previous best of 216 that was recorded at the Red Wolf Classic last season.
Noto finished the day with four consecutive birdies. His round of 66 and tournament score of 209 are both new career records for the Louisiana Native.
Also competing for the Ragin’ Cajuns were Kyle Pritchard, Ethan Savoy and Thomas Petts. Pritchard finished the tournament with a two-over total of 218. Ethan Savoy shot a 225 in his first collegiate tournament, including a one-over round of 73 in the third round. Thomas Petts finished one stroke behind Savoy at 226.
Jeff Karlson from Kennesaw State won the individual competition after shooting a 65 (-7) in the final round to finish with a total of 203.
Southeastern Louisiana captured the team title with a total of 845. Memphis and New Orleans finished tied for second just behind with a score of 846. Arkansas State finished fourth, one stroke ahead of UL, with a score of 854. Kennesaw State finished tied with the Cajuns in fifth.
Next up for the Ragin’ Cajuns golf team will be a trip to Alvamar Golf Club in Manhattan, Kan., for the Kansas Invitational. The three-round tournament will run Sept. 28-29. —
