Former Women’s Basketball Coach: Roger’s next step

Eric Narcisse, Daily Advertiser, March 15, 2013

Coming off the program’s first playoff season in school history, the Lafayette Christian Academy Lady Knights will be under new leadership next year.

Former UL Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball head coach Errol Rogers, who spent this past basketball season as an assistant coach at Vandebilt Catholic, has been hired as the new head basketball coach of the Lady Knights.

"I’m happy to be the head coach at Lafayette Christian Academy," Rogers said. "My kids go to school there, so I couldn’t be any happier than I am to be able to coach girls basketball at this school."

Rogers has served as a head girls basketball coach in high school before enjoying stints at Holy Rosary, Opelousas Catholic and Lafayette High, before serving as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Bethune-Cookman and Mississippi State before accepting the head job at UL.

"This is something that just happened," Rogers said. "I already coach fifth and sixth grade football at Lafayette Christian, so when they talked to me about coaching the basketball team I was all for it. It all just worked out."

The Lady Knights, who qualified for the playoffs as a No. 32 seed in Class B this past season, will be moving up to Class 1A next year as they begin competing for district honors in football.

"They had a good year last year," Rogers said. "They made it to the playoffs for the first time ever in Class B. They have some very good young girls at the school. We’re going to take things one day at a time, but there is a lot of really good young talent coming through there."

Since last coaching the Cajuns, Rogers stated he has received several offers to return to the college ranks, but feels his calling for now is to coach on the high school level.

"For me, it’s not about being a head coach or an assistant coach," Rogers said. "I can be either. What matters to me is these kids and being able to teach them how to play basketball so that we can ultimately make LCA a better program. I like doing what I do and I see great things happening at LCA in the future. It is the right time to go there. It’s a great time."
