UL linebacker Justin Anderson (34) runs into the endzone for a touchdown after catching an interception in the first quarter against Nicholls State Saturday at Cajun Field in Lafayette. by Leslie Westbrook September 14, 2013

Former UL inside linebacker Justin Anderson has signed with the New Orleans Saints, his agent confirmed Saturday.

“That’s awesome,” Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth said when he heard the news about Anderson, who was UL’s leading tackler as a junior in 2012 and as a senior in 2013.

New Orleans-based agent Martin Fischman tweeted out congratulations Saturday night.

Anderson — from Foley High in Foley, Alabama, near Mobile — appeared in two regular-season games last year for the New York Giants.

He signed a futures contract with Minnesota last December and was with the Vikings through March.

Anderson recently was in training camp with the Dallas Cowboys, but was waived with an injury settlement after sustaining a sprained ankle.

With multiple linebackers injured following its opening preseason game Thursday night, New Orleans signed him after a workout.

The Saints’ first-year assistant linebackers coach is James Willis, who was UL’s defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach for two seasons, including Anderson’s senior year and last year as well.
