Former Football: Gridiron Alumni Update From Peter Batton
Submitted by Peter Batton Gridiron Alumni, The season is upon us, how great it is, with all the hope of a successful 2008 campaign. I wanted to give you all a quick update of the happenings with the Gridiron Alumni over the last few months. With the huge success of our 5th annual spring fundraiser this year, we, with your help, were able to donate over $5,000 right back into the program. This year we decided to contribute to the Equipment Dept. /Lynn Williams’s group and Training Dept. /Dr. John Porches’ group. The proceeds were distributed for various projects to help upgrade facilities and equipment. Thanks again for all of your support, I know these two individuals, which have been with our program for approx. 25 years each, are extremely grateful for our group and its cause. As everyone is aware, the GIA encompasses all support personnel to our football team, because without them, the team could not function. I also want to inform you that the GIA sponsored a welcome back dinner for the club August 3rd, our fourth year, on report day, to all the players, coaches, managers, trainers and all other support staff, approx. 200 people, a huge undertaking. We fed them bar-b-q chicken and all the sides, a great way to kick off the 2008 season. This of course wouldn’t have been accomplished without the help of some special individuals that were instrumental in the organization and administering of this event. A special thanks needs to go out to the architects of this event, who were all very eager to help organize, finance, volunteer their time, etc, to keep this tradition alive started some four years ago and they are; Paul Norton, Lee & Mary Beth Carrier and family, Jay & Jed Hebert, Buck Moncla, Robby Waguespack, Ryan Cade, Ben Archer, Victor Shepherd, Will Sirmon, and Jon Duke. Thank you guys! Of course Lynn Williams and John Porche have always supported us in various ways, and this was no different, thanks to you as well. Our first home game is September 20th against Kent State and we will kick it off with a Gridiron Alumni tailgate, details to follow. Look forward to seeing everyone soon. Peter Batton Go Cajuns!!
