Former Football: Brandon Stokley, Baltimore Ravens agree to contract

Brandon Stokley is returning to Baltimore, 14 years after he was drafted by the Ravens in 1999.

Stokley has agreed to a one-year contract and is traveling from his home in Denver to Baltimore Saturday night to join the team, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the signing.

Stokley, 37, caught a touchdown for the Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV, and his career would later take him to Indianapolis, Denver, Seattle, the New York Giants, back to Denver and now, finally, back to Baltimore, where he can help a depleted receiver group.

The Ravens this offseason lost receiver Anquan Boldin to a trade, tight end Dennis Pitta to a season-ending hip injury, and second-year receiver Deonte Thompson is now nursing an ankle injury.

Stokley nearly retired after the 2011 season, in which he played in only two games with the Giants, but re-signed with Denver to reunite with Peyton Manning in Denver. He enjoyed a career revitalization with the Broncos, playing in 16 games (including the postseason). He caught six touchdowns, including one against the Ravens in the playoffs.

Stokley has been working out on his own since his contract with the Broncos expired in March, waiting for the right team to call. His chances of re-signing with the Broncos disappeared when Denver signed slot receiver Wes Welker to a two-year contract early in free agency.

If he makes the 53-man roster in Baltimore, Stokley will face the Broncos on Sept. 5.
