Former Cajuns Basketball Coach Shipley Passes

www.ragincajuns.com – Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns are saddened to learn of the loss of former men’s basketball coach Beryl Shipley, who passed away Friday night after a battle with cancer.

The winningest coach in UL history, Shipley guided the Cajuns for 16 years and finished with a 293-126 record. In 15 of his 16 seasons, the Cajuns finished with a winning record. Starting in 1963, Shipley rattled off five Gulf State Championships in six seasons, including a win at the 1964-65 NAIA District 27 Tournament Championship.Shipley also put the Cajuns on the map nationally after moving up to the NCAA level in 1970-71 and advancing to the NCAA College Tournament that same season.The next two seasons, Shipley led UL to two Southland Conference Championships and was ranked as high as 8^th in the nation.Other notable achievements:
– Four time Gulf States Conference Coach of the Year
– Two time NAIA District 27 Coach of the Year (1964-65, ’65-66)
– Two time Southland Conference Coach of the Year (1971-72, ’72-73)
– 1972-73 Louisiana Collegiate Coach of the YearA memorial service is planned for noon Friday at First Baptist Church in Lafayette. Visitation will be held on Friday from 9am until the time of service.

Coach Shipley Passed Away – Memorial Service planned for Friday, April 22 at First Baptist Church

I am deeply saddened to announce that around 10:30 last evening, Coach Beryl Shipley very peacefully passed away at his home.

The memorial service will be at noon Friday with visitation from 9-12 A.M. at First Baptist Church, corner of Lee and Main in Lafayette.

His obituary will be posted when it is finalized and published.

My condolences to Dolores and the Shipley family and may the peace of the Lord be with him.
