Football: UL: Five things to watch – game at 11:21 a.m. CST- Rusty Whitt Special on ESPN at 10:25

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, November 10, 2012

Terrance Broadway

UL’s sophomore QB went from 42nd nationally in passing efficiency to 26th after going 23-of-32 for 373 yards, four TDs and one INT in last Saturday’s win at UL Monroe. "He showed leadership, showed playmaking ability, managed the game," Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth said of Broadway, who also ran 14 times for 87 yards and one TD vs. ULM. The University of Houston transfer from Baton Rouge will be making his fifth consecutive for injured Blaine Gautier. He’ll do so for a team that according to starting RB Alonzo Harris has "always had confidence in him." Added Harris with reference to the transition from Gautier to Broadway: "We’re a real close team. We depend on each other. We’ve got each other’s backs, so it wasn’t too much sweat."

Florida’s pass game versus UL’s pass defense

Florida’s pass game is ranked just 114th in the nation, averaging just 140.11 yards per game. But UL’s pass defense also is ranked just 114 among 120, yielding an average of 294.63 yards. The Gators — and especially first-year starting quarterback Jeff Driskel — supposedly want to use today’s game to improve their air attack, and if the Cajuns allow them to it could spell doom for UL.

The scoreboard

Florida has averaged 51.5 in its four previous meetings, all wins, with UL (though all were played before the school became known as UL). UL, meanwhile, has averaged 8.75 — and was shut out in 1945 and 1985. But the Gators are averaging only 26 points per game this season — and the Cajuns are averaging 35.

UL’s defense versus the run

Perhaps not too much should be read into it, because opponent passing sometimes was plentiful (see Troy, 528 yards). But in its five wins this season, UL has allowed its opponent’s run game no more than 74 yards (Lamar 38,Troy 60, Tulane 53, Florida International 55, UL Monroe 74); in its three losses, UL has yielded 242 or more yards (Oklahoma State 330, North Texas 242, Arkansas State 257). Florida, for the record, is averaging 192.7.

The BCS standings

It will be interesting to see how today’s game, and a game next Saturday vs. FCS Jacksonville (Ala.) State for the matter, will impact the Gators in the BCS standings, where they currently are ranked No. 6 behind Alabama, Kansas State, Oregon, Notre Dame and Georgia — and one spot ahead of LSU.

Athletic Network Footnote:  Whitt on Game Day

Tim Buckley, Daily Advertiser, Nov. 10, 2012

An ESPN camera crew was in Lafayette earlier this week to film a segment on UL strength and conditioning coach Rusty Whitt, a former Senior Special Forces Communications Sergeant in the U.S. Army who served tours of duty in Iraq.

The piece will air around 10:25-to-10:30 this morning (central time) on ESPN GameDay as part of the network’s Veteran’s Day weekend coverage. Whitt is the recipient of a combat infantry badge, two Iraqi campaign medals and an Army commendation medal with valor.
