The UL Ragin’ Cajun football assistant coaching staff is the highest paid in the Sun Belt Conference, according to a USA Today salary database of Division I assistant coaches for all public school football programs in America.

The total for the Cajuns’ staff is $1,064,500, followed in the Sun Belt by Arkansas State at $1,011,800 and Georgia State in third at $922,800.

For the record, undefeated Sun Belt champion Georgia Southern ranked No. 8 at $786,500.

UL offensive coordinator Jay Johnson was the top paid coach on the Cajuns’ staff at $190,000, which also ranked him No. 3 in the Sun Belt overall behind the Arkansas State duo of Walter Bell at $205,000 and Glen Elarbee at $200,000.

UL’s defensive coordinator James Willis is sixth in the Sun Belt at $165,000.

Naturally, LSU ranks No. 1 (as well as nationally No. 1) at $5,499,269 with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron No. 3 overall and No. 1 in the state at $1,315,967.

UL is No. 2 in the state, followed by Louisiana Tech’s staff No. 3 at $999,700. Tech offensive coordinator Tony Peterson is the state’s highest-paid, non-LSU assistant coach at $200,000.

UL Monroe is No. 4 in the state and No. 10 in the 11-team Sun Belt, only ahead of Idaho, at $724,300.

Tulane was one of 21 private institutions not listed in the report.

Following UL’s two coordinators were: Mitch Rodrique ($123,000), Reed Stringer ($117,500), Jorge Munoz ($107,500), Tim Rebowe ($101,500), Tim Edwards ($95,000), David Saunders ($93,000) and Marquase Lovings (71,500).

Saunders has already left the program and was replaced by Matt Wallerstedt, but the report did not reflect midseason changes. Rebowe has already gotten a pay increase to $130,000 when he was announced as the new Nicholls State head coach.

The staff totals for the rest of the Sun Belt are: Troy No. 4 ($908,985), South Alabama No. 5 ($873,230), Appalachian State No. 6 ($823,000), Texas State No. 7 ($807,988) and New Mexico State No. 9 ($757,090).
