Football: Tulsa Defeats Louisiana In Offensive Shootout, 66-42TULSA, Okla. – D’Angelo Brewer rushed for 262 yards on 38 carries with three touchdowns and Tulsa pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in an offensive shootout, 66-42, on Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Chad President completed 14 of 20 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown as Tulsa (1-1) recorded 667 yards of total offense, including 424 on the ground. Justin Hobbs caught five passes for 103 yards to the Golden Hurricane, who outscored Louisiana (1-1) 21-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away from a 45-35 lead. "We’ve missed too many tackles and had too many breakdowns after two games," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. And when you’re not playing good, that makes it even worse because they’re (Tulsa) going to put up a lot of points on a lot of people this year." Jordan Davis completed 21 of 32 passes for a career-high 309 yards and two TDs for Louisiana while adding 60 yards and a pair of TDs on the ground. Trey Ragas gained 130 yards on 11 carries for the Ragin’ Cajuns, scoring on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter that cut the Tulsa lead to 52-42 with 12:24 remaining. Ryheem Malone (8 receptions, 119 yards) and Keenan Barnes (6 receptions, 102 yards, 1 TD) each recorded their first 100-yard games in their career for Louisiana, which totaled 596 yards of total offense in the game. "Offensively, I think we’ve found our quarterback, I couldn’t be more proud of the offense today," Hudspeth said. "We did some really good stuff offensively, and stayed in a track meet with a team that wants to be in a track meet. It got away from us late when I felt we had to get back in the game by trying an onside kick. We were aggressive on fourth down and took some big shots down the field. We scored points, we put up nearly 600 yards of total offense and we our running backs really took good care of the ball." Both teams traded field goals on their opening drives of the game before Brewer scored on a 50-yard run that gave Tulsa a 10-3 lead. The Ragin’ Cajuns responded with a 10-play, 54-yard drive as Davis scored off the left side for his first TD of the day with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter. The Ragin’ Cajuns closed to within 24-23 in the second quarter when Davis found Barnes on a 15-yard TD pass with 2:05 remaining in the half, but President connected with Hobbs on a 69-yard TD on the ensuing possession and Corey Taylor added a 1-yard TD run that gave Tulsa a 38-23 lead at halftime. Louisiana scored on its first two possessions of the second half as Davis hit Elijah Mitchell on a 19-yard scoring play before adding a 9-yard TD run that cut the lead to 38-35 with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter. "We tried to stay in with them, foot-to-foot in a track meet and for about three quarters we did," Hudspeth said. "But we’ve got to go back to the drawing board defensively and get our best 11 on the field." Tulsa responded as Brewer capped an 11-play drive with a 1-yard TD and Shamari Brooks scored on a 5-yard run to push the Golden Hurricane lead to 52-35 with 14:05 left. T.J. Posey (13 tackles) and Corey Turner (9 tackles) each posted career-highs for Louisiana with Zi’Yon Hill forcing a fumble in his Ragin’ Cajuns debut. Louisiana will return to action on Sept. 16 when it travels to College Station, Texas to face Texas A&M in an 11 a.m. contest at Kyle Field.
