Football: Surgent & Anderson Earn Player of the Week Honors

Brian McCann, Sports Information Director, November 11, 2013

LAFAYETTE, La. — As the Ragin’ Cajuns football team begins preparation for Saturday’s road game at Georgia State, Cajuns seniors Darryl Surgent and Justin Anderson have been honored for their performance in Louisiana’s 41-36 win over Troy last week, Surgent being tabbed the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and Anderson being selected as the Co-Defensive Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

"It is always nice to see our student-athletes recognized for their performance on the field," Louisiana head coach Mark Hudspeth said.  "Thursday’s win was a hard fought one with so many players having an affect on the outcome, including Darryl and Justin, who have been two of our senior leaders all season."

Surgent earned the honor after returning a first quarter punt 67 yards for a touchdown to become only the sixth player this season to return both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown.  He set a school record at Kansas State on Sept. 7 when he brought back a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.

A 6-0, 185-pound wide receiver and returns specialist from Alexandria, La. is concluding a brilliant playing career in fine fashion.  He leads the Sun Belt and ranks third nationally with a 29.9 kickoff return average and is second in the Sun Belt with a 9.8 punt return average.  He is also second on the team in both receptions (25) and receiving yards (311).

A 6-2, 232-pound linebacker from Foley, Ala., Anderson registered his fifth double-figure tackle game against Troy, making five solo and 10 total tackles.

Anderson enters the week with 53 solo and 95 total tackles to lead the Sun Belt Conference and rank fourth nationally in solo tackles (6.2 tpg) and 12th in total tackles (10.6 tpg).  He also leads the team and leads the league in fumbles recovered (2), is second in forced  fumbles (3) and 14th in tackles for loss (7).
