Football: SMITH AND FELDERS Take This Week’s LSWA College Football Player Honors

BATON ROUGE — Three players, including a pair of defensive players, earned voting honors this week as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Louisiana College Football Players of the Week.

Derrick Smith of Louisiana-Lafayette earned offensive honors in the state and Sun Belt Conference, while the Cajuns’ Johnny Felders shared defensive honors with Lawrence Darby of McNeese State.

Felders was also the Sun Belt defensive player of the week.

Smith, a freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., had five catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing one time for seven yards and a score. His receiving touchdowns were of 18 and 25 yards. All three of the touchdowns were in third down situations (3rd and 18, 3rd and 8 and 3rd and 7).

Felders, a junior from Pine Grove, La., led the Cajuns defense with seven tackles including four solo tackles in Louisiana-Lafayette’s 49-28 win over Northwestern State Saturday in Lafayette. He posted his first career interception in the Cajuns end zone with UL-Lafayette holding a slim seven-point third quarter lead. He also recovered a fumble at the Cajuns one-yard line in the fourth quarter.
