Football: Six Cajuns Earn NFL Invitations – Each Will Take Part In Mini-Camps This WeekendSix Cajuns Earn NFL Invitations LAFAYETTE, La. — Six members of the Ragin’ Cajuns football senior class who helped Louisiana to back-to-back 9-4 seasons and victories in the New Orleans Bowl, have reached agreements as undrafted NFL free agents to join NFL clubs in time for mini camps this weekend. Signing as NFL free agents are Brett Baer (St. Louis), Cordian Hagans (Pittsburgh), Javone Lawson (Arizona), Emeka Onyenekwu (Miami) and Melvin White (Carolina). In addition, wide receiver Harry Peoples will attend the Chicago Bears mini camp but has not yet signed a free agent contract. I’m very excited for each one of our NFL signees,” Louisiana head coach Mark Hudspeth said. “They have worked very hard and are very deserving of these opportunities. “I am even prouder that each of these players has already graduated or is on course to graduate, leaving here with two bowl championships and now an opportunity in an NFL camp. As a coaching staff, we couldn’t be more excited than when we see our young men succeed,” Hudspeth added. Baer, a kicker from Brandon, Miss., earned first team All-Sun Belt choice as both a kicker and punter as a senior. He finished his career as the most accurate kicker in NCAA history, making 45 of his 50 field goal attempts (.900), sharing the school career record with 45 field goals while holding the records for extra points made (121) and attempted (129). Baer set the Louisiana single season records for field goals made (20), extra points made (53) and attempted (56), each set in 2012, while ranking second in points (113) and third in field goals attempted (23). Hagans, a 6-5, 280-pound defensive end from Snellville, Ga., started 12 of the 13 games this past season, 11th in the Sun Belt with four quarterback sacks and third on the squad with 7.5 tackles for loss. A two-year letterman, he was second among the defensive linemen with 41 tackles. Lawson, a 6-1, 183-pound wide receiver from New Orleans, La., finished sixth in school history with 134 career catches and fifth with 2,098 yards and 15 touchdowns. He missed four games with a wrist injury as a senior but still caught 40 passes for 611 yards and five touchdowns. Lawson had a breakout year as a junior, earning first team All-Sun Belt and second team All-Louisiana recognition after making 63 catches for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns. Onyenekwu, a 6-3, 250-pound defensive end from New Orleans, La., received first team All-Sun Belt recognition this past year after ranking third in the SBC with 6.5 sacks (-35) and sixth in the league with 14 tackles for loss (-51). A four-year letterman, he led all defensive linemen with 42 tackles. White, a 6-3, 191-pound cornerback from Freeport, Texas, started finished fourth on the team with 60 tackles (47 solo) as a senior. A starter in all 26 games during his final two seasons, he earned honorable mention All-Sun Belt mention after making 64 tackles as a junior. Brian McCann
