Football: Red Edges White To Wrap Up Spring Practice, 50-46LAFAYETTE The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns football team wrapped up five weeks of spring practice on Saturday as the Red team recorded a 50-46 victory over the White team during a 60-minute workout in Cajun Field.
With several players out of the lineup due to a variety of injuries, the Cajuns used an innovative scoring system that awarded points in a variety of situations. Points were scored in kicking drills, 7-on-7 drills and in an Oklahoma drill.
I thought there was a great vibe out here today, head coach Mark Hudspeth said. There was a good crowd, great weather and I think the fans even liked the format. They got to see their favorite players, up close and personal, in one-on-one situations. I thought it made for a great finish to spring football, adding a lot of excitement heading into the summer and eventually into the fall.
I thought the defensive line looked really good in the Oklahoma period, Hudspeth said. I thought they did some nice things, which both sides did. I thought everybody came out, competed and had fun.
Individually, Stephen Brauchle went 4-for-5 in field goal attempts for the White team, connecting on kicks of 50, 55 and 60 yards. Terrance Broadway connected with James Butler for a touchdown for the White team in 7-on-7 drills in the red zone. Hunter Sto: ver connected on his first four field goals for the Red team, before his 60-yard attempt bounced off the crossbar.
Unable to conduct as much live action as planned due to injuries, the Cajuns used the majority of the 15 practices to work on fundamentals. With a veteran team that returns 17 starters and 35 players on its season-ending, two-deep depth chart, Hudspeth praised the effort of his team through the five-week period.
Were ahead of the game, fundamentally, with the exception of tackling, Hudspeth said. Weve got to make up some ground there once we start fall camp. Once we get there with a full team, well be able to get more live scrimmage work. Im just thankful that we didnt have any season-ending injuries heading into the summer.
Were going to be at full strength (in fall practice), anxious to get the signees in, and get rolling.
Louisiana will open the 2014 season on Aug. 30 when it plays host to Southern University at Cajun Field. The Cajuns will host Louisiana Tech (Sept. 6), Georgia State (Oct. 4), Arkansas State (Oct. 21), South Alabama (Nov. 1) and Appalachian State (Nov. 22).
Season tickets are available by calling the UL Ticket Office at (337) 265-2357.
