Football: Peoples’ turnTim Buckley, Daily Advertiser, Oct. 2, 2011 UL receiver Harry Peoples seemed to figure it was only a matter of time before his turn came. Saturday, it did. "We’re a spread offense, so the ball can be given to anybody," Peoples said. "So on any given night anybody can have a great night — and luckily tonight was my night." Was it ever. In his first season at UL, the junior from Winona High in Mississippi and Holmes (Miss.) Community College caught 12 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown during the Cajuns’ 37-34 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night. He becomes the first Cajun receiver with more than 100 yards this season, notable because non-tight end receivers had only such game — by Darryl Surgent — in 2010. Peoples’ 12 catches also tie Brandon Stokley’s record for most by a UL receiver at Cajun Field. "Great catches by my man, Harry," quarterback Blaine Gautier said of Peoples, who got extra reps against the Owls because usual No. 1 UL slot receiver Rico Joseph was out with a previously undisclosed shoulder injury sustained in practice this week. "He definitely got open. The coverages they ran also helped us, but he caught the ball in some tough spots," Gautier added. "A lot of them where bang-bang plays, but he continued to catch the ball and break tackles and get up field. And that’s definitely what we need." Starting changesFreshman Jacob Molbert started Saturday at outside linebacker in place of true freshman Trae Johnson. It was Molbert’s first start of the season, and the first time Johnson has not started. Molbert wound up leading the Cajuns in total tackles with 10. Johnson played and assisted on one tackle. Meanwhile, true freshman Alonzo Harris opened at running back for the Cajuns and wound up with a team-high 57 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. Along with Rob Walker, Aaron Spikes and Qyen Griffin, that makes four different starting tailbacks for UL in five games this season. Spikes has two starts this season, including one last weekend at Florida International. Captain, my captainsDefensive lineman Bernard Smith and fullback Brad McGuire served as UL’s captains Saturday. It was the second time this season McGuire has served as a team captain. No one else had the honor more than once this season. Helicopter tourUL head coach Mark Hudspeth was seen making the rounds at local high school games Friday night — in a helicopter. Hudspeth was spotted at several locales during his recruiting tour, including games at Lafayette High, Crowley and New Iberia.
