Onyenekwu & Brown Earn Player of the Week Honors
Duo Honored For Performance In Near Upset of No. 6 Florida

LAFAYETTE, La. — After making the big plays that helped Louisiana in its near upset of No. 6 Florida on Saturday, the Ragin’ Cajuns football duo of senior Emeka Onyenekwu (New Orleans, La./McKinley) and junior Bradley Brown (Baton Rouge, La./Capital) have each been the recipient of player of the week honors.

Onyenekwu has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week and the co-defensive player of the week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association while Brown has been tabbed as the LSWA Special Teams Player of the Week.

“Our performance over the weekend at Florida was filled with many outstanding performances that allowed us to play with the Gators for four quarters and put ourselves in a position to win the game,” Louisiana head coach Mark Hudspeth said.  “Emeka and Brad were responsible for some of the biggest plays during the game and I am happy that they have been recognized for their effort.”

Onyenekwu was honored after keying the Cajun defensive effort that limited Florida to just 311 yards of total offense by making a career-high nine tackles (8 solo) with 2.5 quarterback sacks (-10) and 2.5 tackles for loss (-10).   His performance helped Louisiana to register a season-high five sacks against the Gators.

Brown made the biggest play of the game for the Cajuns against Florida, breaking through the Gator protection to block a third quarter punt.  Blake Comminie returned the blocked punt 22 yards to put the Cajuns ahead, 17-13 with 4:03 left in the third quarter.

The Cajuns (5-4, 3-2 SBC) return home this week for the first of two consecutive contests when UL hosts Western Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 17 beginning at 6:00 p.m. in Cajun Field.  With three games remaining in the regular season, the Cajuns need to win out to assure themselves of at least a second place finish in the Sun Belt with the possibility of winning a share of the championship a possibility.
