Football: O’™Cyrus Torrence Named FWAA Freshman All-American

Torrence joins Elijah McGuire (2013) as only Ragin’ Cajuns to garner the recognition

LAFAYETTE – Freshman O’Cyrus Torrence was recognized as one of the top newcomers in the country when he was named to the 2019 Football Writers Association of America-Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America Team, the FWAA announced on Monday morning.

Torrence joins Ragin’ Cajun great Elijah McGuire as one of two players in program history to pick up the recognition. McGuire earned the honor after a stellar rookie campaign in 2013 when he rushed for 871 yards and eight touchdowns before earning First Team All-Sun Belt honors and claiming the title of Sun Belt Freshman of the Year.
 
Louisiana’s offensive lineman was one of two Sun Belt student-athletes named to the squad, joining Georgia State’s Travis Glover on the list of honorees.
 
A native of Greensburg, Louisiana, Torrence started in 13 of the team’s 14 games in 2019, picking up his first career start on Sept. 7 against Liberty. In that game, He became the first true freshman to start a game on the offensive line since Jesse Newman started against ULM on Nov. 20, 2004.
 
Torrence played a key role for Louisiana’s elite rushing attack this season, which ranks third in yards per carry (6.28), sixth in total rushing yards (3,604) and tied for third in rushing touchdowns (42). He is also a member of an offensive line that finished tied for fifth in the country in sacks allowed (1.07).
