Football: Moten and Baer Grab Weekly Sun Belt Accolades

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns junior cornerback Jemarlous Moten was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week and junior kicker/punter Brett Baer was named Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

With his two interceptions in Saturday’s game at Arizona, Moten helped the Cajuns tie a 40-year old NCAA record thanks to a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown. Moten’s other interception also led to a Cajuns touchdown. He had a team-high nine tackles (8 solo) and a tackle-for-loss on the afternoon.

The Cajuns now have seven “pick six” touchdowns on the year, equaling that of the 1971 Tennessee Volunteers. Both of Moten’s INT touchdowns have come against two of the best quarterbacks in the nation, as his first was against Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden and the other against Arizona’s Nick Foles.

Baer had a spectacular day at Arizona as the Cajuns kicker/punter. Among his five punts, Baer booted kicks of 60 yards (downed at the 10-yard line), 50 yards and 48 yards.

He had an onside kick and recovered the ball himself, marking his third successful onside kick of the season. Baer also kicked a 20-yard field goal and made a fourth-and-11 pass completion of 13 yards on a fake punt.

This week’s honors increase the number of weekly SBC honors for the Cajuns this season to 12, which extends the school record for Player of the Week accolades, besting the previous high of nine set in 2008.

It’s the fourth time this season that the Cajuns had multiple honorees (Lance Kelley & Brett Baer on Oct. 3 following FAU game/Melvin White & Alonzo Harris on Oct. 31 following MT game/Devon Lewis-Bunchanan & Brett Baer on Nov. 7 following La.-Monroe game).

Baer picked up his third special teams honor of the 2011 season and fourth of his career. For Moten, he collected his first career SBC weekly accolade.
